arrifana - i just came back from arrifana and despite it being august there were some nice waves. about 5 ft with some north west winds. i was expecting it to be the onshore slop that we get back here in cornwall most of the time but the huge cliffs sheltered the spot amazingly, it was either smaller and clean on the right side of the beach or bigger and maybe not as nicly shaped as the other side but stil fairly good. there was even back spray on a lot of the waves.

as for the point on the right there were some sets coming through but the guy at the local surf shop in aljezur was say it needs to be at least 6ft with a solid westerly swell. i suppose if i could have been bothered i could of got some waves at the reef but the beach break was good enough and there was the odd chance of getting covoured up. i would say its a lot heavier than most of the southwest beach breaks. it does close out a lot but real steep and if u have a little patience then u can have a longer ride. some of the local boogers were foookin amazing, pulling backflips out of everything

and i would say its more of a boogers wave. the locals do tend to drop in on non locals but there is a fairly friendly atmousphere but i like it a lot and the cliffs around is a nice thing to look at when waiting for the sets.

nice little village, nice break worth the trip and completly empty spots around if u go for an adventure through some of the dirt tracks

Arrifana Rules - If you want to surf the best swells of arrifana you need to go there in the earlier spring. In that time of the year you can get the most radical waves you can dream the only problem its the crowd at weekends, besides that you will get the waves of your dreams,

check out around the corner - Arrafana gets well crowded, it is surf school hell when the wind is up as it's the only place with any shelter. There is a better beach break just around the corner. It get the same swell and works 2 hours before high. Highly recommeded if arrafana packed. drive out of Arrafana and 1km out, you go down a small dip, there is a dust road right. Follow the road past a clump of trees and toward the obolisk, as you come to the top of the hill take the left away from the obolisk. At the next fork keep left and at the next take a right. Then drive down to the car park and its a short walk. good luck.

- I am looking for a lifeguard working at Arrifana beach, it was just some seconds as I saw him, but that was enough to remember his face now. I can't go there anymore as I life far up north (I mean where we have -30 degrees in winters), so anyone, if you go there, please give him my email address, or just ask for a his name! It is not worse to describe him - about 20y.o., dark skin, not high, but very good looking. Yes, sounds very typical, but...

john j - i must say ive been to arrifana many times and its not bad,but the comments here are way over board,do not book a holiday on the strength of comments here, the main beach is pretty much a closeout wave most of the time and the point break while being classic is very inconsistent, nice area, hard to get to and over rated.

On-shore Wind - Hi everyone,
how does Arrifana work with SW-winds? What are possible alternatives? Probably Mareta? Thanks for comments!

arrifana - I'm travelling to Arrifana in the beginning of July. Does anyone know if there is consistent swell then and what are the crowds like?

Live the dream - I consider Arrifana as one of the best spots in Portugal... In the falling tide it can get very classic with 3 different waves: in the left of the beach, you can find traditional longboard waves for fun and manovering, in the center of the beach, fast and hollw wave, both rights and lefts, in the left part of the beach, the best wave... can´t miss it! In winter time, you can be the only guy in the water, with a veru translucid water...´
Enjoy the food in the nice restaurants near the beach (in the village) with fresh seafood and fresh fish everyday!
