Additional Information
It was over a year ago I was there so can't remember exactly how to get there. Suggest looking for the pass in the reef. There was a place to park on the seaside of the road with trees to cover the car. Perhaps the beach juts out a touch

Atmosphere
A big swell came from the south and all lined up. It was in the six to eight foot region and the place fired. Incredible barrels with heavy takeoff. I have surfed plenty of heavy reefs and this was right there with them with regards to intensity. Two sessions first had up to 5 guys out right of high tide. Fun - 1 broken board and 1 broken leggie - 6 foot. 2nd session 3 guys out (I was lucky to find two other kiwi surfers) and in the 6 to 8 range. One ten footer came through at the end and seemed to cause the reef problems (I was on the inside paddling like a madman away from the swells so didn't see too well). We were warned not to surf on outgoing but there were no problems - just gets heavy but not dry.

General
Don't surf here alone I'd say. The water rushes out of the reef pass and its a hike of a paddle - head way left coming in or you'll do a lap. Don't be fooled into thinking Raro has no waves - even the locals don't seem to know. I surfed pumping waves on this island - you just need the right conditions.
