Since a huge number of groins has been put on the beach (in order to create a new concrete path), the wave is not working well any more. Backwash...
The main reason people come to Madeira is to surf Jardim do Mar, a serious, world class, big wave spot. It can hold huge rights and is obviously a dangerous spot. This long workable walls have tube section for the brave(or tha kamikaze!), while most mere mortals are happy to take the survival line. Being caught inside by the big sneaker sets at Jardim do Mar is a punishing experience.
Another punishment is trying to get in and out of the water, by clambering over sharp boulders between set!
Atmosphere
Madeira is a nice place for vacation and surfing, the atmosphere is good, and there at least 10 hard local surfers and 20 medium/beginner surfers in all the island, so waves are not crowded.
When this spot works, if you're not an expert, it's better if you look from the land the other sufers who came from all the world to take(sometimes with tow-in) these very big and powerful waves!
General
It's cool, it's world class! It's only for expert, and it's good also for a crazy tow-in session!

Mr - An amazing wave with difficult access. The rip can pull you out of location and constant paddling needed. But one hell of a big wav eon its day

Jardim do mar wave is almost dead - Since a huge number of groins has been put on the beach (in order to create a new concrete path), the wave is not working well any more. Backwash... It is incredible, nobody talks about this insanity.

Back in96 - Memories of sheer terror at Punto "not so" pequena. Solid 6-8 Hawaiian scale. Blue Black water, 20' barreling face. Sat on the shoulder after the near miss amping on fear. Paddled back in and hyperventilated. Shot video the rest of the trip. Saw a solid 20' swell unload at Jardim do Mar. So big that the concrete house where we were living was shaking at every set. I'd go there again for the beauty alone, but have much disdain for the government. Go to savethewaves.com and support their cause.
