San Mateo is a dirty little fishing town with no hostels yet. Don't even think of eating there if you want to avoid projectile vomitting. The wave barrels off the point hard, then forms a massive wall that will carry you as far as your legs will take you, the very end of the wave barrels and then closes again. Walk further around the point and paddle out to avoid the current when it is big. Remember the rocks around.

Great waves, too long a paddle back afterwards.

Makes it all the worth of a tropical surf vacation.

excelent surf - San mateo is a town near Manta, have a wonderful hostal Mar de Ensueños, have a rooms with air condition, tv, and excellent meal under price, and a very cordial treatment

dangerous town - I went there and asked a local where was the wave in the town and they took my boards telling me that they hate gringos...dangerous

get a local surfer to show you around - San mateo is nice left swell i used to surf all the time when get big like 12 foot is awesome, if you are foreign (gringo) surfer get a local surfer to show you around, be nice of course couple ceviches and beers will be happy to show around lol,you will be having good time there.
