Gerard Sports Marketing (GSM) returns to China--bringing the sport of surfing to the Chinese people once again. Everyday--twice a day--in the City of Hangzhou (pronounced "han-joe"), a tidal bore wave rolls upstream on the Qiantang (pronounced "kwin-tang") River. And each year, in September, the wave is at its largest. To witness this awesome sight, hundreds of thousands of Chinese people come to the annual Wave Watching Festival in Hangzhou. And this year, GSM and its Chinese partners have expanded the footprint and scope of the annual gathering to the brand new CBD district in the City of Hangzhou. In addition to world class surfers on the river, events include a skatepark, expo area, SUP pool, and live fashion show featuring Billabong and Quiksilver. Last year, we demonstrated to the Chinese government that surfing on the river was feasible... and that the idea of broadening the annual festival to include surfing was a good one. This year we delivered! The 2009 surfing festival in Hangzhou was a huge success. The event was a feature story on the Chinese national news channel (CCTV)--and was viewed by approximately 1/2 the entire Chinese population! A solid swell hit West Africa creating perfect waves in Senegal. Normally in the summer time the surf is smaller, but a big hurricane in the Atlantic pushed waves in our direction.
