wesn - Pacitan is pronounced (patchitun) if your looking for directions,it helps.
It is way quicker to fly to Yogakarta then only about 3-4 hr drive, the other way is nice, but 8 hours through mountains.
The guys at local police station are only to willing to show you around and have homestay, ask for JACK (sounds like CHECK)plenty of waves around there, heavy (a break called "Clessem" on small boulders perfect long left with barrells, and a right opposite side of the bay suckky) and other friendly breaks, the rivermouth itself is as perfect as you get, with power.Hig or low tide was good , dont know about sharks water is a nice light brown ha..resturants are great, It is the Current Presidents home town, so there are facilities around.

sharks - this spot is absolutely amazing when it goes off. im an indonesian living in perth and my dad was a local here. My grandpa used to take him out fishing and he would catch nothing but sharks.
no not the big white pointers but little ones bout the length of your arms. although they hardly ever bite. they could still take a good chunk out of you..
i have surfed there a couple of times, quite inconsistent. my advice is if its a tad less than pumping, dont bother heading out

gimme the good oil - After 2 years in east java & sussing the coastline directly south of Malang (to no avail -loads of swell but no accommodating banks or reef set ups) I took a trip to Pacitan. On arrival found a whopping 10+ swell slamming the coast loads of west in the swell so the beachies directly in front of Happy Bay Bungalows were protected & not maxing out so had some enjoyable 3' lefts & rights. The eastern end of the bay was going ballistic with an awesome left hand sand point break set up (off collected river outflow sand build up) screaming through at 8-10' for the three days that I was there. All alone & having never surfed it before I opted to just sit slack jawed on the beach willing it to drop so I could get out there -it didn't.On the way home took a goat track back road & spotted a sweeping pristine clear blue bay with what appeared (from the distance) to be epic waves -but how to get here?I think it's called Pelangi Beach (heading east). There is also a spot to the west called Srau which looked so full of potential (remember it had the swell of the year hitting it so bit hard to fully tell. I believe some areas along the of the southern coast got hammered with some hefty damage to property & (maybe life & limb)I know the area is fickle & inconsistent-then again if it wasn't it would be too good to be true. Right? If it wasn't for the 8 hour white knuckle juggernaut chaos of the roads between my pad & Pacitan I'd like to measure just how often it's ON!Anyone already done the hard yards in that area please share the wealth & tune me @ nattiboi60@hotmail.com
