e confident surfing left and don't be afraid to pull under the lip as it stays open and lets you out. don't pull in if its large and low tide.
Atmosphere
swell wraps around a small deserted island and lines up on the reef it peaks and then runs down the reef and is very hollow.
General
this is one of 10 world class waves in this island chain but without a doubt my favourite as it is hardest to get to and crowds stay away.

The Hole - The hole is a fantastic wave, but in recent years crowds have figured out about it, and it's a very dangerous wave if people are in the way... or if a crowd is pushing people deeper down the reef it get's very gnarly. Also it is inconsistent and if the wind isn't just right forget about it. But if you score it like I have years ago with nobody out and double overhead mindblowing pits... you'll be stoked as it's a very scary wave but offers up long psycho pretty pits.. just don't expect it. Mentawi is general has passed it's prime.

the south sucks - nah, don't even bother with the south part of the islands, the only reason to leave playgrounds is to go to HT's, don't even bother with maccas anymore, there's a surf camp now and when my boat was there all the guys in the surf camp just posted all day and we couldn't even get a wave. Then the captain took us south and the wind was all wrong and there weren't any spots for that direction wind. If we had been in playgrounds we could have just paddled over to another spot that was offshore and pumping. Lost a few days of my trip, i'll never get that back..
