Atmosphere
The place is often packed with tourists, but if there's waves they tend to stay out of the water. If theres waves, its really consistant.
Swell changes dramatically with the tides. Keep your ear on the Coconut Wireless for surf reports, and hop on it if its breaking.
This spotcan get really good, but the wind can play havoc with it. If the waves ever hit over five feet, head to Lamai's reefs or Secret Beach's perfect bay.
General
Inconsistant, totally, but one of the best spots on the island for a bit of speed. Good lefts & rights. You can rent boards here. I've seen it machine perfect maybe three times in two years. If its on expect to paddle a lot. It's easy to get swept down the beach.

sweet surprise! - Just came back from New Year holiday and had a unexpected surprise in chawang beach. 3 out of 5 days with 2-3 ft surf. You have to duck and dodge the swimmers and anything over 3ft is a closeout but after no surf in 6 months it was beautiful! You can rent boards of all sizes, there's one place with fins for boogies and if you talk to the right local he can take you out to some isloated breaks. good luck!

What a a rip .... - Hey ...Surfed here lasty year and probaly will again this year if i can. Had a few lefts and rights here with a lot more power than Kho Panyang. Problem is that its nothing to write home about. Brekas sometimes short and seem to go nowhere , so have to make the most of the first few seconds ...coz thats all you will have. Long beach and a major rip caught me sending me up the beach which sucked coz i had to walk back with white see though baggies on that where my mates and too big :)Overall - Ok to get wet but would not count on getting a decent wave.Mike
