Take some binoculars, There is a rock ledge about 50meters down the trak that could save a lot of walking if its flat. check out bugs aswell.
Atmosphere
Its quiet, usualy only a few people on the beach, You ca either take on the beachie which is more of a shorie than an actual bank or you can head the the western side of the beach (towards killcare) and surf the little point. There is also a barreling lest in the eastern Corner, but you have to paddel around a clif and I wasnt Game to see how it broke, check it out if you go there.... The water is creepy, definately a sharky vibe
General
Good fun if you take a group of mates, less freaky that way...

Is Maitland bay good? - Yes maitland bay is a generally flat beach. In the summer it never works BUT in winter wait for a 7+ SOUTH swell and get down there at high tide and there are some 4-5 footers. They dont barrel they just roll down the face but its a nice cruizy wave for big cut backs and booger its good for practacing forward spinners there are no real dangers. It just looks heaps sharky coz when ever its working there is always cloud cover.
Take it from a local 7-8 ft SOUTH! swell plus hightide equals maitland point going off its chops.
