- Urchins
- Rocks
well when you jump of the rocks raedy to paddle out watch for sea urchins as i've steeped ona few myself. just leave your car at nobb's it is pretty safe there.how to surf is pretty easy when you get to become familiar with it it starts off with a surge and you go forward for about 10 metres then it sucks up into a hollowist wave it is quite good.
Atmosphere
groper is hell as i said the surge to the wave is amazing it produces the biggest air bowl at end of wave the atmosphere is great everybody on the beach just watches you unleash on the wave it rocks on.
General
personally i think it is the best spot in newy (even better than Harbour, pilo's,moon island) it is a great surfing spot.

What happened to it? - The Groper used to be a great wave when it was on, depending on swell direction and tide, it could break well from 3 to 8ft+. On a big southerly swell, The Groper and Merewether were often the only two waves in the city holding it and it could also hold up nicely in a moderate to large north swell. But somethings happened out there, it always breaks shit on a big swell now and only ever seems to hold a short 2ft suck on the reef.

New vs old - 25 years ago things were alot different. Yes things have changed at the groper. It doesn't have the ability to hold BIG stuff any more. I've surfed it over 300-500 times between 1975 and 1988 and had some awesome sessions there. Surge rock used to handle up to 8ft, with 30mtrs of barrel section after an elevator shaft take-off. Me and a couple of mates had the place sussed to the point where no waves went unridden and if you were not in our crew... forget about it. It was definately newys answer to shark Island. Now the place is crawling with lids.. so I've fucked off to Tassie. Adios old friend, you young dudes commenting now have got no idea. This place was epic.
