This can be a great wave, but it is quiet protected from southerly swells. Therefore only the biggest swells cause it to break, otherwise swell with a bit more west in it will do the trick. if ur gunna surf mitchels when its big be prepared to cop a flogin...but also be prepared for some awesome wedgy pits. normally you won't hit da bottom but when its 6ft+ and low tide, watch out other wise ur gonna get smashed! (against the reef)
Atmosphere
very enjoyable and there can be some great tubes.
Around easter time watch out for the samon, and hence cazy fishermen. Oh yeah did I forget to mention the sharks

caspian - Definitely not an "experienced surfers" wave. It's fairly straight forward, slow and gentle, and even when it's relatively big it doesn't break with a lot of force. Fun times on the right, and if it's big enough you may get a few goes with the left, too.

first timer - I went out here for the first time in my life, coz im only just learning I ride a foamy. Here is where my troubles start. Me n me dad run in thu the shorebreak, then a 4ft set comes in (whic h 2 a 11 yr old looks like 8ft) then a 5ft set comes in and im still not out the back. I make it out the back, only to discover a 6ft set about to break on me, i only just make it over the top and another! 6ft set comes in. I sit there in awe as these guys catch thes 6ft perfect right handers. I paddle in with my dad 1 hr later and I say "Next time tell me how big it REALLY is!"
