 Additional Information

You can park right in front of the beach by the camp site. This is a big long beach that streches north up until Ruakaka and Marsden point. There are banks all along this beach. they can get really good on larger swells of 3-5 feet, but then rips start happening and it can be really hard to stay in position. you usually end up getting dragged down the beach for a couple of Km's then have a half hour walk to get back. The best break on this beach is Waipu cove which is at the southern end straight out from the main carpark. Its a right hand point/beach break.

Atmosphere

The Waipu Cove was once the main surfed break on this spot of coast back in the day. But nowadays the quality of the break seems to have gotten worse. You see alot of old pictures of this break looking world class and going off epic but I don't know what happened. Something must have happened to the bank or the shape of the rocks under it.

General

The point can still produce some nice right handers and the beach has some nice banks, but in all my times of surfing here its never gotten as good as what I've had at other breaks along this coast or as good as what I've heard it used to be back in the day. The Cove's like one of those old school mythical spots.

Blair - interesting comments here, i have surfed waipu numerous occasions and when you learn what conditions it works on its a sick wave. I had one of my best sessions here, 3 people out, getting pitted set after set, fast section, can really go off.
