shipwrecks awesome - I was born in Kaitaia (main local town) and live in Sydney. I travel back home to score awesome waves at Ahipara, Shippies and The Bluff. A mechanical world class left hand point break with cruisy down the line waves that break for over 100 metres. Nice to get away from the city crowds.

good stuff - shipwrecks bay was a very good wave i think its the longest wave i have ever surfed, my local break is nahoon reef..so you can trust my judgement.shipwrecks was the second best wave i found on my new zealand tour only to wainui beach in gisborne

the bay - Hi all, I am a local auckland surfer that heads up to the bay when it is on, it needs a solid 6 ft + to work & is epic long walls. watch out for the rocks as you get further round the points. VERY crowded on weekends & holidays as it is normaly the only offshore break working in large swells from taranaki all the way up. Enjoy you might get lucky i have been there on solid 5ft days & had it to my self .

peaks kicks ass - If you think surfing a wave till your legs cramp up is a mith your wrong.Peaks is the longest ride I've ever riden.I was there in january and I waited 3 weeks till a decent swell came(most swell comes in winter,cali's summer)but when it did it was mind blowing.1/4 mile rides at the least,then a walk up the beach a 20' paddle,then do it all over again.If you like left's,nothing is better!I feel very lucky to have surfed such a world class wave.I still have not surfed anything that compairs(and I'm regular foot).

old local living in australia - i have surfed some good lefts in aus including my local box head which is very inconsistent,but tauroa point referred to as shippies is all class on its day. Surfed bluehouse at 4-6 last christmas no crowd and going off.
But that is why it is so good cause there isnt just one spot like manu bay and indicators there are at least ten really good breaks and if yhere is nothing there the east coast is only an hour away with quality breaks itself. PS just treat the local with some respect and dont be a dickhead or they'll kick ur arse. peace out

drops off 1-2 meters - The wrap takes a lot out of the swell, so don't go there expecting giant surf -- it's unlikely.

Still if you have a 4 meter plus swell and south winds you are likely to have a good time.

some info on a great point - Good, very long, grinding, fast wave, but it isn't the most consistent spot around. Needs a really solid swell to get into the bay, and even then you need south winds and lower tides. Swell and wind charts are very unpredictable around here, they change almost every day. The point is usually about 1/3 wave size on the charts, breaks up to about 1km long, but often sections, making several rides through to the beach. Best at 4 to 6 feet (open ocean at 12 feet plus), hollow, fast walls with tube sections. Carpark at end of the dirt road at Ahipara, but don't try walking around the point at high tide, you can't make it around, and it's much better at low tide anyway. Strong sweep along the point. Paddle out from the beach out in front of the long headland, or jump off the rocks along the point. Different fat and hollow sections, but always fast. Outside section is called Peaks, inside section is called Shipwreck Bay, these link together when the swell is over about 5 feet on the points. More good left points further round the cape, but you need a 4WD, only on low tide. 9 out of 10 for mine, but inconsistent.

Shippies in Dec. - I'm comming to Auckland in December and definately wanna surf Shippies. Can anyone give me and idea on swell size/consistency and water temperature in mid-december? cheers.
