Anialation point / Waikokapu Harbour - One of the first to surf here many years ago, 10 - 12 foot faces and biggerand one of the most most thrilling waves in NZMy grandmother was born in Mahia in 1920 we still visit with family who live there, these days I enjoy the many long-board breaks that Mahia has to offer, but still dream of the huge days out at last chance, the reefs 1 & 2 boat harbour, (suicide point) Blacks, Tracks, Mahanga and Rollin Stonesstarting surfing Opatama Mahia in 1965 at age 13.guys around then and regular surfers at Mahia, Jack Mitchell, Chris Karaitiana, Jacob Dehar, Ra Southern and the cuzzies from Nuhaka and Bruce McCracken and the guys from Hastings. From Napier ; Dennis Foley, Ian Davidson, Johny Spit, , Craig Halstead, The Moon Goons, Russel Jones, George RakesBack in about 1971, we held the first ever surf contest at rolling stones and Waikokapu Harbour 10 - 12 ft giant swell, for the Hawkes Bay Board Riders Association and a group of 4 of us were off to the National that year in New Plymouth, which didn't produce any surf at all that Easter weekend. So we packed up headed back to the East Coast and surfed Blacks, at a good 4 - 6 foot on the Monday. So much for organised surf contests!Mahia remains still unexplored by most Kiwi surfers which possibly makes it the most un ridden epic surf in the countryAll good stuff back then and glad that we surfed and pioneered many of the breaks in Mahia.Stay On the Noseglen reid
