Kahutara is a few kilometres south of Kaikoura township. Its located straight out in front of the Kahutara river and bridge. There are two main places to park up. First is just south of the bridge. The second is about 200 meters past the bridge, take a right turn onto a bumpy muddy track which will take you up into a parking area straight out from the break. There are many access points into the water so take your safest pick on the day. Be aware though of the large shore dump during big swells. On a big day the drops can be late and sick, then you will be cruising on a sweet right hander for ages.
Atmosphere
The atmosphere is electric during the big swells in the weekends. Locals, and visitors flock to this area along with the other breaks in this region. The views are worldclass, with the snowy maintains and luscious green hills this place is perfect.
General
Overall this place rocks so try to hit it on a large swell to ride fast hollow long right handers. Peace out!

- saw it firing there last week while on a ski trip....only 3 guys out, 3 -4 ft, hollow, clean. Lucky buggersPity I didn't have my surfboard or wettie. Next trip to NZ i'll have to bring my board

Trots favourite wave in Kaiks - Heavy inside section..surf it too far inside, and you will know what it´s like to be inside the famous 'washing machine'. Not the Fisher and Paykel model, but the Kaikoura special.
