Take the turn off at Hira, just before Nelson if heading west. Cable Bay Road, can´t miss it.
Drive north from Nelson for 10mins you will come to a little church on your left hand side of the road, it's signposted on the turnoff, if you reach the shops you have gone too far by 150 meters.

Atmosphere

I first surfed this spot after christmas 2002, got some .5m to 1m wind slop, but felt the potential. Surfed it with the local bodyboarder.

The takeoff can be hard if you want to make the most of the wave on a small day. I got pitched by a .5m wave onto a rock. It is deceptive.

You can have some fun if you decide to pull out the old body board 'n flippers.

General

Check it out if you are in the area, but it rarely breaks with class. I saw one stand up barrel photo of it pumping at bout 4 foot.... the 50th storm?

cable bay/next door - i have surfed epic cable bay soooo good and yes next door is the place to get good lefts

By old boy , 15-09-2004

short wave - I grew up in Nelson and surfed Cable Bay heaps. Its a short wave, even in optimum conditions it would never even be 150m long, 300m is just ridiculous because the wave only breaks off the end of the point, never down it. Offshore in NE, it is only really any good in a big N swell. Anyone who has surfed Nelson regularly knows where to go for really good lefts..just next door!!
