Head out of town (there is basically only one main road) towards the river. Go past the horse track and follow the road out to the jetty. Park anywhere along the jetty or drive out onto the beach. Lock your cars or the idiot street racers will steal your stuff in a heartbeat. - Rips / undertow
- Rocks
Jump off the rocks right near the end of the jetty. Depending on the tide the rips can be pretty nagging. Hang right off the rocks and catch some fun waves. During really big swells there is a spot up the river that breaks! Although the towns sewage empties into it the locals said its worth it to surf in a river. Like all Kiwis the locals here seemed pretty cool.
Atmosphere
Westport is an awesome town. My bro and I spent Chrismas there and had a great time at a restaurant called the The Yellow House Cafe. The best food we had throughout New Zealand and the family that runs the place is very nice. Not much to do in the town but worth it to spend the night there if you are coming through.

- nah the tip always does get crowded during summer, its the only time it really gets decent so everyone in town is out there, winter it generally has to much south west in the swell and the river is usually in flood so it has a hideous drift which makes it difficult to surf but during summer it settles down heaps leading to some classic days

double edge sword - the tip is one those places where you can get the wave of your life or a surf so bad you want 2 quit, also it can look so good yet be so weak and horrible, need perfect conditions to really work, try summer.
