Haast is no byron bay!!!!! - Haast is a pretty wild spot... locals in gumboots with helicopters more common for transport than cars!!!!Sandflies are killer... A very young country with loads of shingle been pushed out of the rivers always changing the banks. We get up to 13 metres of rain a year in the hills behind haast .. every second car is a f##kin tourist camper van.. road maggots. The waves dont compare to say Taranaki but on its day there are some classics.. doesnt handle big swells that well as very few reef breaks but those reefs are out there get a fishing boat and head towards Antartica!!!No hippies down thse parts ... head to Golden Bay for that top of the south island west coast . good sustainable community loads of organic gardens a few waves up there too... The backcountry snowboarding down here is sick... befriend those locals with a helicopter.. unless you like bush bashing through thick jungle like rainforest for 2-3 days to get to the snowline!!!!!Later

Near byron bay - Yes, Haast is just north of Byron Bay. Watch out for all the hippies, heiresses and real estate agents. Bring your bikini!
