An outstanding and hollow right point break. A real classic. Long hollow lines with plenty of power. About 3 distinct sections with the middle usually best. Often thought of as a tropical Rincon.
Atmosphere
La Libertad can be a dangerous town. There are many unsavory characters who are often armed. Thieves abound...but so does good food, cheap beer and excellent and consistent surf. Plus it is easy to get to for long 4 day weekends from the US. The Punta Roca restaurant offers excellent food and insider knowledge. Try to stick around your hotel and the restaurant area, especially at night. Other areas can be dangerous, use common sense and don't flash cash or jewlery.

- was there in 1990, radical place, rebels bombed the point 4 days before i got there, went round checking out the smouldering buildings, heard the sounds on gun fire each night after they blew up power grid and causing blackouts, fuck all surfers , me and 4 other aussies and two yanks. Surf was some of the best waves i ever surfed in 26 years, got smacked in the head with flying fish, did mushrooms , smoked a joint on the way to the point and got busted by the army , they took it off me let me go and smoked it. me mate came down with hep b. drunks waiting outside the chemist to get there daily metho, and the guy i stayed with at hotel Rick would have to be one of the crankiest cunts ive ever met. dodgy but like i said would have to be considered one of the best waves on the continent, certainly world class. There is a nice waterfall near by.

Mixed reviews - Was here in ES in 1998/9.Good waves when they came. Some locals helped me out, place to stay...seemed to be re-formed crackheads / born again christians. Cool enough.Got ill with the shits.Stayed in Posada Familia.Played it safe.Think everyone should really.Got a lift with a local one evening and hit a drunk on the bridge.Hard.Shocking.No-one cared. But the waves were fun, PR barelled alot.Great experience, but was glad to get out too!!!Be a shame for the country to slide, i was told Britain helped screw the place over too...so maybe everyone should tread lightly here and drop the ego / pride thing.
