Additional Information
You can rent boards for $5 /hr and it is not that far from Long Bay which is super consistent. The boards are ok, I'd bring my own. Its mostly sand and rock but I saw some reef like stuff on the bottom and it was sharp in some areas.
On really big days you surf past the rock outcropping on the left, which has a stair case. There are bungalows right on the break. Very mellow vibe, less hassling and safer to be on the beach than on other North Coast spots. Jamaica is definitely underrated for surfing...

Atmosphere
I was in Discovery Bay for a week for New Years 2006 and there were chest+ waves the entire time I was in Jamaica everywhere I went (except on the drive from Montego). The locals said the day I went the swell had actually dropped, but it was still good chest+ 8-10 second swell and protected from wind because its a cove.
I think this area gets the most swell year round, but spots further south might be the place for summer swell. If its flat, there's the blue lagoon, blue mountains, frenchman's cove, lots of stuff to do.
There were potential spots everywhere on the drive from Port Antonio to Discovery Bay that looked really rippable.
This is a long (3-4 hour) drive from Ocho Rios and there aren't many transportation options on the North Coast. There's a lot of povery on the North Coast, but it seemed mellower near Port Antonio. No taxies, busses , private beaches etc...makes access difficult.

General
Get a good guide. There are no taxis, busses, or transportation infrastructure on the North Coast. If I was gonna plant myself somewhere for surf, it would have to be Long Bay / Boston Bay area.
