my first surf! - i came on holiday to the west of ireland in 2005 and i surfed for the first time, at keel. Its great for beginners but check the tide times 'cos there are rips!

- Like pretty much all of the West coast, with a big swell of the right direction, the right wind and the right tide - a number of options open up to you on Achill Island, let alone further afield throughout county Mayo! However, don't turn up for a week or two in Autumn and expect all of the secrets to reveal themselves to you. That's the beauty of this place, with a bit of perseverance and a lot of luck you might just score one of those truly memorable sessions tucked around a headland or hiding across a bog somewhere. Equally you could leave empty handed no matter how good the charts look! Regardless, what you can take away is spending time in one of the most beautiful, rugged and laid back areas of coastline in Europe. Respect and enjoy.
