Best place to park is in a lay-by/at the side of the road adjacent to the Range gate. This is the first lay-by you come to on the left after having turned off the main, following signs for Whitsand and Tregantle fort. Have to walk down through the rifle range, which is rarely used (I know, I'm in the military.) If the range is being used, access to the beach is not possible.

Atmosphere
Brilliant beach, to rival the best of N Cornwall - possibly better, as it's far less crowded. Good alternative to the more accessible, but smaller and more crowded Wembury; and in rush hour, it takes just as long to hop on the Torpoint ferry and over to Whitsand as it does to fight through the city traffic to Wembury.

General
Good deserted beach. Deserted, as the steep walk down puts a lot of (unfit) people off.

OK - Witsands is fickle and soft 90 percent of the time. After 4 years in plymouth, i can think of about 10 good sessions out there. "rivals any of N cornwalls breaks" Yeah OK. If you believe this, best go check out the secret spot under the tamar bridge which only breaks on a full moon, spring tide on a massive northerly swell! (ps - dont tell anyone)
