If the tide is up you surf right in the protected cove and it keeps the wind off of it. IF the tide is out you paddle out and take off out of the cove behind the rocks. You can't see the beach from the HWY except when you go across Jug Handle Bridge and then it is a glimpse. Water is super clear and you can see the bottom... Water is cold so full suit in the 3/4 or thicker and booties. The train is fairly easy to get down to the beach and the lot is paved. Lock you car as there are a lot of homeless and hippies in Fort Bragg and Mendo.
