When the surf gets large, it is rarely clean enough to be ridden, plus the paddle out toward the outer sandbars can be a huge pain in the pass. The ocean is always colder here than the surrounding area due to constant upwelling from the deep. Seals tend to hang out near the mouth of the river, as well as down at the State Park, and great whites have occasionally been spotted patrolling the lineups.
