Experienced Surfers ONLY! Lonesomes is an awesome right when it decided to work! It's a fickle big-wave break and can hold size up to about triple-o.
This wave is located on the NORTH Point of Spooners Cove and breaks towards the inside of the cove.
Drive into Montana De Oro and stop once you get the Ranger Station and main campgrounds entrance. Pull over onto the grass parking at the top of the cliff that overlooks Spooners Cove and the beach.
All the locals park at the top. DO NOT park at the beach parking lot. You will be immediately pointed out as an outsider and an idiot.
The view from the parking area is awesome. You are able to see three surf spots from here. You can view Lonesomes off the North Point, A-Frames in the middle (but way outside) of the cove, and Spooners breaking off the South Point of the Cove.
Lonesomes is the little brother of the Big Left that breaks on the SOUTH POINT of Spooners Cove.
Lonesomes is just that. It's a very long paddle and for experienced big-wave chargers only!

The takeoff zone is in front of where the dunes end into the cove and way outside. You do not want to get caught inside here! Myself included, many have broken boards here, and had to scamper up the dry reef.
Like all waves inside of Montana De Oro, it is ALWAYS BIGGER THAN IT LOOKS! And just like all the other waves it also requires a bigger board than you think to get into the wave. Something like a 9'0' is comfortable but many go bigger.
Takeoff is the most critical here. It rarely closes out, but the peak can shift further out during the bigger sets so stay towards the open cove more to stay on the safer side.
You'll never see more than 6 guys out here. Two reasons, one - it hardly ever breaks year round, and two - when it is breaking clean enough to surf, all the other big-wave spots are going off as well.
It is mostly a big drop with a short shoulder ride, but you can 'challenge' your wave selection ability and ride much further in if you can make the small flat section where the wave begins to back off.
Be warned though, riding in much futher and not paying close attention, you will quickly find yourself in a small racy barrel with reef going dry below your huge 9' gun. Try manuevering and your liable to kick out into a rock.

- Pretty fun. Only surfed it 6-8 foot. When it's like that watch out you don't get washed into the rock in the middle of the cove that everyone climbs on: there are some caves that if you get washed into you won't make it out alive.
Just a novelty spot, and very dangerous to boot. Hardly ever breaks and really sharky. I love it!
