Houston to 288 lake jackson/freeport then drive for about 50 min. Then get on 332 drive intill you see the exit for surfside. Drive on that road untill you get to the light at the bottom of the bridge, across the street from diamond shamrock. Turn right go down about four streets then go left. You will probably see a bunch of surfers hanging out.find a place to park, but don't on the right side of the road or you will get towed.

The Light Beer of beach breaks - I lived in Surfside for about a year and I can say that it's a good beginner's spot. The sandbars change every hurricane season, so some years are better than others. They locals are mellow, except for a few retards (Bingo) who are looked down on by even the other locals. Some gang-bangers hang out at the jetty park, but there's not much reason to go there anyway. The cops are douchebags, as has been mentioned before.
Just before a hurricane everyone jumps into the channel, where you'll see overhead+ walls that almost break. After hurricanes you can get a day or two of clean surf. Otherwise, from August to April you get pretty consistent waist-chest mush.
I can't imagine using a shortboard here. You can get some steeper peaks further east at the pier.
Every decade or two a hurricane eats the street closest to the beach and the lineup retreats another block. It's kinda weird seeing houses out in the water.
