This is a local favorite! On the Kona side, just south of the airport. Off the 19 hwy go West toward the Energy Lab, turn left onto a dirt road, where the lab is and drive along the beach. You do not need 4x4, but a rental will get thrashed, a truck with good suspension is recommended. Head toward a large out cropping of trees, right in front of it to the left and right are a few breaks....pick one that looks good and hit it all day! It is mostly a right, but you can go left too. It is December 22 today and it is about 2-4ft and very clean in the am, blown out a bit in the pm. Great view of dolphins doing flips when out.
Park along side the dirt road, by the sand. May want to were booties, my feet are pretty cut up after one day.
Atmosphere
You will meet mostly locals camping and surfing 9overnight camping is illegal, but no one seems to care) Best bet not to get hassled, is to be a decent surfer (no body boards) and either say very little or nothing at all to locals...DO NOT snake any one!
General
This break is sooo much fun on a good day...usually breaks all year round...mega fun at 4-6ft (that's face size).

Sorry Golf Course = OC - No theres no fee, hasnt been forever, but now its public access with a paved road and parking lot and tourists, used to be a nice family spot.
You like lotsa people? big parking lots? golf courses and tract homes? You like looking at houses you can never afford and trimmed lawns while you surf? you like kua bay better now that there hundreds of people there? you like rules? then you like orange county bro. they even cut down most of the trees. its not about the number of people, its about the culture. keep kona country.

808state - If you have to be experienced to surf here then I guess you have to be experienced to handle the shorebreak at Hapuna too. I never like Pinetrees. I thought it was a POS break with way too many people out. Fun place to go camp though. Until it got developed. At least the new golf course will get rid of all the drug users and homeless people down there....hopefully.
