Bring a bigger board. This is the spot to hit when everything else is closing out. Bring your paddle muscles too 'cause its a good 3/4 mile paddle through beach break like conditions. ITS WORTH IT. STAND UP SHACKS!
Atmosphere
Crazy. that pretty much sums it up. I've heard people talk about whirl pools and crazy stuff like that. Its not really too much of a hazard but definitely have an eye out for sharks because its sooo far offshore.
General
Just an outside sandbar that breaks when everything else is closed out and the Bowl is too crowded.

Out there - The REAL spot outside is way outside and I have not seen a surfer that far out. On a big days(last year, 06)there was a break about 150 yards off the beach and I did see surfers ride it. The only people who ride "Outside" are the paddle surfers. The paddle is long, the peak is shifting but the drops are great!! There is a bouy 1 mile off the inlet and it is not that far outside us.

craziness - Outside ponquoque is not made up, not at all. As recently as fall 2010 this spot has been absolutely firing off but every time I have seen it you have needed tow assist or a 50 foot boat to make it out of the inlet (or just a skilled jet ski driver who is ballsy enough to take on current and 8+ ft surf in the inlet). Paddling this spot would be nonsense. When it breaks the peak is well over a mile out. This spot has a short throwing right and a long reeling left section. When it goes off it will be minimum 8-10ft walls.
