The beach right off the public access is the best. You can walk up and down the beach from there. Local surf shop provides good info about surf spots and good breaks.
Atmosphere
Very laid back little beach town.
General
It's the best place in Washington for all kinds of surfing.

Jeti is suxxored! - OMFG north jetty is so hella ghey! There's sharks everywhere, trannys from CA running around in bikinis playing grab ass, dude's on shrooms barking at the sea lions getting them all aggro, and some barney on a big ass stupid S.U.P. dropped in on me and almost killed me twice! Go back to Seattle and surf Ballard you frikin noob!

- I just got a S.U.P. and wanted to learn how to ride it before going to Westport and potentially embarrassing myself. I have been riding at the north jetty last two months and have to say it can be very impressive with powerful long lasting rights. There is rarely anyone there but I usually ride Mon-Tues. Since I like to ride right its nice because you end up back near the jetty and can more easily get back out that. On bigger days there seems to be a powerful north current if you stray too far from the jetty though. It can get shallow quick in front of the big homes be careful. I see more sea lions and seals, big schools of fish etc then Westport so yeah sharks are probably around but I haven't seen any from my 6'0 vantage point. This an advanced surf spot.

if califorinans should go home..... - then don't ride boards our shapers make, blow your our blanks, make your own cloth and resin. EVERYTHING you rely on to surf is from CA...and most WA surfers who think they're local are trannys from CA. without CA you kooks can't surf!!! and why are all you 'locals' scared to add your name to your comments?
