Matanzas is far from world class, but it almost always breaks bigger there than the local beach breaks... lots of places to ride and it gets swell from a lot of directions... overall one of the better Inlet waves in Florida

localism not as heavy as people say. definetly not.

It looks like a perfect point break when it fires. By the way, Ive surfed this spot for years and havent seen a shark.

Why it is called Matanza - The Massacre at Matanzas
In 1565, almost 175 years before construction began on Fort Matanzas, another story was played out at the Matanzas Inlet--the massacre of the French Huguenots. A large French force under Jean Ribault had left their settlement of Fort Caroline in Spanish-claimed territory near present-day Jacksonville to attack the Spanish at their new settlement of St. Augustine (San Agustin).
A storm shipwrecked the French fleet farther south. When the Spanish discovered the French on the beach, they ordered them to surrender, give up their Protestant faith, and accept Catholicism. Being without weapons or food, they did surrender, but renounce their faith they refused to do. So the Spanish massacred nearly 250 Frenchmen as trespassers and heretics near the inlet which was then appropriately named "Matanzas", the Spanish word for massacre. This confrontation began 235 years of Spanish control in Florida.

Watch out for Scrambo !!!! - Surf this spot all the time,good longboard spot,many locals who know who is who ! Be respectful !! make sure you park correctly or you will have to listen to Scrambo !!!!

my take... - Matanzas is far from world class, but it almost always breaks bigger there than the local beach breaks... I ride there every week and it is consistantly bigger... waves will be in the knee high range on the beach breaks, it will be waist there.. lots of places to ride and it gets swell from a lot of directions... overall one of the better Inlet waves in Florida IMHO
