This is a big time Longboard spot, shortboards go down to the washout. It's a cloud break, thus making the wave break towards the end of the pier during high tide, when it's getting a Hurricane swell.
Atmosphere
Layed back and easy going. Locals are easy to get along with, contrast to the Washout, where they eat newbies, unless they got game. Police are bothersome at times on keeping surfers from shooting or surfing near the pier.
General
Awesome spot to learn or just cruise the waves.

lol - Sure, there are some nice waves to be had at the pier, but it's not a great wave. It's good and about as good as any longboarding spot in SC, but that's not really saying much. Does get very, very crowded here, so don't try learning there. THe water will be crowded with surfers, swimmers and fisherman - it's not a place to learn. Oh and only on of the photos is from the pier, the others are from the washout.

world-class only if you've never been anywhere else - I surf the pier all the time. It's fun and CAN be a long wave with a great workable face. But it can also be pure crappola. What we think of as "epic" on Folly is thought of as small and weak elsewhere. Just tellin' it like it is.

sickness - the pier can be an intense long pointlike wave similar to the superbanks, sebastians inlet or the cloudbreak in hawaii. only a few times a year it gets like those waves, but it does rock and roll. intense pressure in the water with all the slashers, but a few waves of you life can be scored. super tubes at low tide.
