If you wanna surf, do not come in the summer - In the summer you will not get waves here. The swell rarely is over 3 feet and the sand botton is a shit. You gotta come from April to October and you will get good days. However, Barra just handle 4 feet waves. More than this and all the waves close. Then you go Recreio, Macumba, Prainha or Grumari.

lots of fun - just spent a week in Rio, caught lots of good waves at Barra da tijuca. nice beach, gorgeous women, warm water, good waves - what else do you need?

Barra is overrated - I've just been to Rio, and hated Barra de Tijuca. I've stayed near posto 8 (Ayrton Senna street), the beach was full of trash everywhere and the water somewhat polluted, you could see stains on the sea of some sort of waste (I thought it was oil or something), besides waves sucked big time, and I had to paddle a lot to get to the break point. Awful beach. I recommend Grumari ten thousand times, waves weren't that good either, but the place is just awesome.
