The atmosphere is bleak. There is nothing in Las Tunas but the surf.
General
Good option when Montañita gets crowded. It is just a 20 minutes ride by bus, and you could get 10 times more waves.

Spent a Month Last Winter In Puerto Lopez & Surfing The Rest Of Ecuador - This is not really one of Ecuadors stand out spots, but it is good for a few reasons...#1 If you dont like the hustle and bustle of the cities and get over the mystique of being cracked out in Montanita (and overcrowded at the point), Lopez is only 10 mins from Las Tunas and there are a bunch of other points and beachies in the area. #2 Lopez is a relaxing and chill town with cheaper prices and cooler locals (ask for Julio, Javier, and Wellington at the Clandestino Bar) and low key backpackers than is Montanita. #3 Las Tunas is super consistent and breaks just about every single day, so while you are waiting out the points for a big swell, it can offer some flat spell fun. It never dropped below 2-3 feet and rideable for half of December and all of January. When it gets big, think witches rock costa rica, if its clean...Hope this helps, I'll try to send some pics when I get a chance.

12 de Octubre - I just surfed north (1km) of Las Tunas, where Sol the biologist lives. It´s called 12 de Octubre and last week I was the only surfer there with better waves than Montañita averaging 35 surfers. However, if you need a repair job or a new cheap coffin, Cesar Moreira in Montañita is your man. He´s the local long board champion, excellent shaper with caña wood and one of the driving forces behind environmental protection. Even though the weather during this time of the year is shitty as hell and bloody freezing, the waves are remarkably consistant and fun, especially when you´re riding them alone. Please folks, keep surfing at Montañita :).
