Recent storms have destroyed many banks down this coast which used to create awesome waves. However, as some waves have diminished others have sprung up. This area is a prime holiday area in the summer (dec/nov) so if planning a surf trip the best time in terms of waves and general atomosphere would be May. The Hibiscous coast has arguably the best consistent weather year round in South Africa. The surf is also very consistent in that there are always waves breaking (i.e no flat season). There are a wide range of breaks across this coast with the typical south coast point breaks producing probably the better the waves. Righthanders are most common with a rare lefthander every now and then.
Surfing in the Hibiscous Coast is based around two main regions. Scottburgh to the north and Margate/Port Shepstone to the south. Surf shops are in great abundance around the Margate Beach area and there should be no problems in renting or buying equipment etc.
Between Scottburgh and Margate the coast is very rural and unexplored, definately great surf potential. Enjoy exploring.
Surf breaks to consider if travelling here:
St Michaels (competative break)
Scottburgh (quality and competion)
Vulamanzi Point (amazing towering right)
The Spot (longest ride)
Margate Beach (great morning wave)
Southbroom (standard point break)
Green Point (classic right)
Banana Reef (for the goofy footers)
Ifafa Pipes (when and if it breaks)
Umzumbe (isoalted soul surfing)
Seasonal swell & wind variations:
East swell with a westerly wind does wonders. Summer and Spring months can have a lot of onshore winds. Most the offshore winds occur around April and May.
Warm water all year round, a shorty may be neccessary in winter. Otherwise its boardshorts :).
