Surfer or not, Coromandel is a destination. Beautiful golden beaches and clear blue water make this, even by New Zealand standards, a great place to pass a week or three. The Coromandel has many beach breaks, but suffers from the (relative) lack of swell, typical of the east coast. Locally the Coromandel has twisting roads making progress slow - take your time!
Further south in the Bay of Plenty (not classified as Corommandel) The Mount has excellent surf and a very active surf scene. Try out Tay Street and Ocean View Rd areas. (further down than the Main Beach) You could also try Waihi Beach(less known) and also Matakana Island which you can only get to by boat(has amazing swells)-40 mile long island.

Waves in July? - I will be in Whitianga in mid July. Any decent chance of scoring surf this time of year there? We will be comingto the Coromandel on our last night in NZ. How is Raglan in mid July. Is the wind constantly on it (onshore), or does it ever lighten up (mornings/evenings)?Any info would be appreciated!

Correction - It's Mount Maunganui... this wave is also known as Lake Maunganui. However it can get epec in the summer months... March or Feb especially! If its chop suey, check the main beach and its usually good in the blow hole. Puka mate!!!
