me - I went to highschool here, surfed a lot back in the day. Jumping off Risely Pier during hurricane sessions is a lot of fun. It can get really good, hurricanes, storms etc. However, this break, as well as topsail, do not compare in the slightest to other breaks in the area. (OBX, WB, MASE).
The only thing going for Onslow is the low numbers. Whoever said to watch out for the kooks really has no idea what they are talking about, and has probably never surfed a good (ie crowded) beach. There is a tight knit group of O-Bay surfers here, like 6 of them. There may be more now, but in the late 90's crowds were non existent. The comment on the life guards is sad but true. They will tell you when and where you can surf, and during hurricanes you often have to park at TLZ Blue Bird and paddle over. They will block the bridge and prevent anyone getting on. To summarize, there must be a big swell to get anything decent here, the bars suck. When it does go off, it is awesome, and there is no one around.

Way Underrated - If you have access to this beach it's awesome. I've been here for 4 years now and anytime there is a storm close by the waves are great. Most times there's at least something.

OBL - I was a local for six years when I was in the Navy. I think late last year my best friend and I were getting ready to surf, and the most lively older woman who was a troop leader or something for the boyscouts. She went on to tell us she was the mother of the original Onslow Bay Boys, and that they were surfers. She told us stories of adventures to Hawaii and etc. Just wanted to share that.
