GENERAL This Region covers the 250km from Lima south. The coastal area is a spectacular desert running directly into the ocean. Beaches, headlands and coves abound - providing an enormous range of surfing posibilities. The area around Punta Hermosa has a very high density of quality surf spots
CLIMATE This area is dry all year: it never rains. The winter can be cold and the beaches are often covered in sea-fog. Summer is better, but you will still get foggy days. Summer is summer, with warm sunny days and very crowded beaches!
SPOTS The area is full of quality surfing, with point-breaks such as La Herradura, Punta Rocas and Cerro Azul being the best known; as well as offshore reefs for big-wave riders such as Pico Alto and Kon Tiki. Rock-reefs abound, with horror shows such as Penascal being there for the brave. For the air-generation, try the beach breaks of Lima and Explosivos to the south.
CROWDS Apart from the best known spots, in summer - you will find uncrowded quality spots all year. Peru has a small, dedicated and excelent local surfing population, with few international visitors.
FAME In 1965, Felipe Pomar became World Champion at Punta Rocas, and is not surprsingly something of a national hero! Javier Swayne won the Panamerican Championship in 2007, and Sofia Mulanovich was the first Latin American ever (male of female) when she won the World Championship in 2004.

El Niño - Does anyone know, how strongly would the weak to moderate El Niño effect on the coasts and surf from Lima to North between october/january? Peru seems like a great place, but could the weather ruin it all? Any experiences?? all info would be appreciated!

Punta Hermosa Accom - I stayed at Marita's after reading about it here. It was great. I stayed full-board for not much cash (not sure quite how much sorry). Super hot showers were great for the South American winter, food was great but the two best things were:
The coffee - grown on Marita's husband's farm up in the Andes
Marita - very friendly, chatty & helpful.
Truly a welcoming place, recommended.
